Install five apps before you fly: CP for trains, Google Maps for navigation, Uber or Bolt for city rides, Carris Metropolitana or Metro de Lisboa in Lisbon, and IPMA for weather and sea warnings. Details by step
Set up before you leave. Install CP, Google Maps, Uber or Bolt, Carris Metropolitana and Metro de Lisboa, and IPMA. Open your bank or card app and switch on travel notifications, or the first hotel charge may be declined. Download offline maps for the Algarve and the interior, where signal drops in valleys.
On arrival, connect. If your home plan does not roam at home prices in the EU, buy a prepaid SIM from MEO, NOS or Vodafone with your passport, or install an eSIM before landing. WhatsApp is the standard messaging app, so keep it for guesthouse and tour-operator contact.
Moving around. Use CP for Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains between Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Braga and Faro; fast trains need a seat reservation. In Lisbon, the metro and Carris Metropolitana buses cover the city and suburbs, and the Viva Viagem card holds single fares. In Porto, metro and STCP buses work the same way. Uber and Bolt fill the gaps at night or when a bus is slow; both are legal and widely used.
Day to day. Google Maps is reliable for driving and walking, less so for bus timetables outside the big cities. For restaurants, use Maps plus your own judgement rather than a single review score. For weather and sea conditions, IPMA is the official source and matters if you plan to swim or hike the coast.

Tips
Do not rely on one ride-hailing app. Compare Uber and Bolt prices in the same moment; the difference is often a few euros on a longer trip. At Lisbon airport, follow signs to the pickup zone rather than accepting an offer inside the terminal.
For trains, book Alfa Pendular and Intercidades seats ahead in summer and around holidays; urban trains do not need reservations. Keep a screenshot of your ticket, as signal in stations can be patchy.
If you drive, use Google Maps or Waze for traffic but check toll information separately; some motorways are electronic-only and need a transponder or a pre-paid ticket. Carry a card that works abroad and a small amount of cash for small towns.
