Porto Ercole
Half a day to a full day: walk the historic walled core, see the fortress, and eat pizza by the harbour. Not a base for the region.
Porto Ercole is a small fortified harbour town on the Monte Argentario promontory in southern Tuscany. Its Renaissance walls, Aldobrandesca fortress, Corsini garden and a couple of good pizzerias fill half a day. Most travellers visit as a stop between Grosseto and the coast or combine it with Porto Santo Stefano and Orbetello.
