Porto Alegre
Use Porto Alegre as a 1–2 night gateway to the Serra Gaúcha, not a destination in itself: the lakefront and Cidade Baixa fill a day, then head to Gramado.
Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul and the main air and bus gateway to the Serra Gaúcha hill towns. The city itself is a working Brazilian metropolis with a compact historic centre on Lake Guaíba, a strong bar and music scene in Cidade Baixa, and a food culture built on churrasco and gaúcho beef. Most travellers give it one or two nights on the way in or out of the mountains.

Get around
Buses run on radial lines into downtown terminals, with T-prefixed transversal lines crossing between neighbourhoods; pay the fare to the conductor before the turnstile, cash or the TRI card. Lotação minibuses (R$8, air-conditioned) stop anywhere on request. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap by US standards and the sane choice at night. Trensurb covers the metro area, including the airport and Novo Hamburgo. Walking works inside a neighbourhood, not between them.
