Portmeirion
Go for one day, not a stay: the village is a 2–3 hour walk-through. Sleep in Porthmadog or Harlech and arrive at opening.
Portmeirion is a small Italianate village built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis on his own peninsula between 1925 and 1975, run as a visitor attraction and hotel rather than a lived-in village. Day guests pay admission and walk it in a couple of hours; hotel guests get the place after the gates close. It is the setting of the 1960s TV series The Prisoner, which is why many people come.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Admission is charged per person and rises at peak times; book online in summer — check the official site for 2026 prices and opening dates.
- The village is not a normal village: shops, cafés and the hotel keep their own hours, and parts close out of season.
- Trails and the beach path are steep and uneven in places; wear shoes with grip.
- Mobile signal is patchy on the peninsula.
- If you rely on bus 99B, check the last return before you go in — it is a long walk back to Porthmadog.
Very safe. The real risks are weather, wet slate steps on the trails, and the last bus or train leaving before you are ready — check return times before you start.
