Portland
Give Portland one night if you are driving the Princes Highway west of Warrnambool; two nights only if you add Cape Bridgewater and the petrified forest.
Portland is Victoria's first permanent European settlement, a deep-water port town about 360 km west of Melbourne and a short diversion off the Princes Highway. It sits well beyond the signed Great Ocean Road, which ends at Allansford near Warrnambool, so treat it as a separate western extension of a south-west coast drive rather than the road's finish. More than 200 buildings from the 1800s survive, the harbour still works for a living, and southern right whales visit in winter. It is a working town, not a resort: come for heritage streets, the maritime museum and the coast at Cape Bridgewater.

Get around
Portland has no useful public transport for visitors: the town is walkable, but Cape Bridgewater, the petrified forest and the wind farm all need a car. V/Line runs a train to Warrnambool with a connecting coach on to Portland and Mount Gambier; check the timetable before you build a day around it. There are no regular passenger flights into Portland's airport, which handles charter traffic only.
