Portland is the largest city between San Francisco and Seattle, with a compact downtown, a river through the middle and Mount Hood on the skyline. It is a food, beer and coffee city more than a monument city: plan around neighbourhoods and day trips, not a checklist of sights. Summer is dry and bright; the rest of the year is grey drizzle. It is a good 3-night stop on a Pacific Northwest route, and a base for the Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon coast.

Get around
MAX light rail and TriMet buses cover downtown, the airport and the east side; a contactless card or phone tap works at platform readers. The streetcar loops downtown and the Pearl. Downtown is walkable and bikeable; a car only pays off for the gorge, Mount Hood or the coast.
