Cape Elizabeth is the easiest win. Portland Head Light sits in Fort Williams Park, with paved paths, a small beach and open lawns; go before 10am in summer for parking. Two Lights State Park a few minutes further east has rocky shore and picnic tables. Both are exposed to wind, so bring a layer even in July.

Freeport is a shopping town with a genuine outdoors edge: the L.L.Bean flagship is open around the clock, and Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, 10 minutes away, has short trails to Casco Bay ledges. It works as a rainy-day trip because most of it is indoors.

Brunswick is a small college town with Bowdoin College at its centre, a good art museum and a walkable main street; pair it with Harpswell's fishing coves or Bath's Maine Maritime Museum for a full day. Bath is about 15 minutes further east by car.
