Base in Portimão for 2–3 nights if you want Praia da Rocha and Benagil caves; skip the town centre itself, which is a working port, not a resort.
Portimão is the Algarve's second city and the launch point for Praia da Rocha, the Benagil caves and the region's best grilled sardines. The old town is a real Portuguese city — cheap, unpolished, useful — while the beach strip 3.5 km south is where most visitors sleep. Pick it over Lagos if you want a bigger beach, lower room rates and boat trips; pick Lagos if you want a walkable old town with hostels and nightlife.

- Summer parking near the beach fills by mid-morning; use the bus or arrive before 10:00.
- Many Praia da Rocha restaurants and bars close from November to March.
Portimão is a safe city by Western European standards; the real issues are pickpocketing in summer crowds, persistent drug sellers on the Praia da Rocha promenade, cold Atlantic water and cliff edges with no barriers.
