Porthmadog
Give Porthmadog 2 nights: one full day for a Ffestiniog or Welsh Highland Railway round trip, one for Portmeirion and the Cob. Skip it as a base if you have no car.
Porthmadog is a small harbour town of about 3,900 people on the Cambrian Coast line, and it works as a two-night base for the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railways, Portmeirion and the southern edge of Eryri (Snowdonia). It is a rail and narrow-gauge junction more than a sightseeing town: the town itself takes an afternoon, the railways take a day, and the surrounding coast and mountains take the rest. A car helps for the coast and the passes; without one, buses and trains still cover the main moves.

Get around
The town is walkable: station to harbour is about 10 minutes, station to Tremadog about 15. Buses (T2, T22, Sherpa'r Wyddfa S4) link the coast, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Caernarfon and Pen-y-Pass; the 1bws day ticket covers North Wales buses. A car makes Portmeirion, the Llŷn beaches and the mountain passes far easier. Parking in the centre is limited in summer.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Narrow-gauge trains sell out in summer: book dated seats ahead, and note that some services are unreserved-carriage only.
- Portmeirion charges admission and closes to day visitors at times for events: check before you go.
- Dovey Junction, a possible change point from Aberystwyth, is remote with no facilities: change at Machynlleth instead if you can.
- Coastal weather turns fast; the Cob and the beaches are exposed to wind and rain even in July.
- Many cafés, attractions and some pubs run reduced hours or close outside Easter–October.
A low-crime small town; the real risks are coastal weather, tide and sand on Black Rock Sands, fast A-road traffic on the Cob, and unlit paths after dark.
