Portarlington
Go for one night or a ferry day-trip from Melbourne: mussels, a calm bay beach and the pier, 1 h 20 min by ferry. Skip if you want surf or nightlife.
Portarlington is a small fishing town on the Bellarine Peninsula, about 30 km from Geelong, known across Victoria for its farmed mussels and its calm north-facing bay beach. It is a slow half-day town: the pier, the main street, a bakery and a couple of seafood places. The ferry from Melbourne Docklands makes it an easy day out, and one night is enough unless you are using it as a Bellarine base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No ferry back from Portarlington on Mondays and Tuesdays: check the timetable before you plan a day-trip.
- Ferry tickets are sold online only: book before you travel.
- The bay beach is calm and shallow but not patrolled year-round: check surf lifesaving signage in summer.
- Midweek in winter many eateries close or run short hours: check before you drive out.
Very safe. The real risks are cold bay water, unpatrolled swimming outside summer and wildlife on the road at dusk if you drive the peninsula.
