Portage la Prairie
One night is enough: stop for Fort la Reine Museum and the Coca-Cola can on the Trans-Canada, or day-trip 1 h from Winnipeg. No car, no trip.
Portage la Prairie is a farming and railway town of about 13,000 on the Trans-Canada Highway, 60 km west of Winnipeg. It is a practical stop between Winnipeg and Brandon, not a destination in itself: a heritage museum, a 5.2 km lakeside walkway, a folk festival or two, and the point where Canada's two national railways cross. Almost everything worth seeing sits along Saskatchewan Avenue or within a short drive of it, and public transport inside town is thin, so come with a car or accept long walks.

Get around
A car is the realistic option: sights are spread along Saskatchewan Avenue and out to Crescent Road. Walking works for the downtown core only.
