Port Vincent
Give Port Vincent one night if you want a swim and a fish-and-chips dinner; two nights only if you are towing a boat or using it as a Yorke Peninsula base.
Port Vincent is a small eastern-Yorke Peninsula holiday town — population around 500 — built around a sheltered bay, a jetty and a pontoon. It is a water-sports and fishing stop rather than a sightseeing town: you swim, launch a boat, walk the foreshore and eat. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from Adelaide, about 2 hours 15 min by road, and stay a single night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Mobile coverage is patchy away from town and along the coast; Telstra and Optus are the most reliable. In an emergency, move to higher ground.
- Long drives between peninsula towns with few services: fill the tank at Port Wakefield, Ardrossan or Minlaton.
- Summer fire danger and total fire ban days: check the CFS website before a day of driving.
- Swimming is safest inside the bay near the pontoon and jetty; there is no surf lifesaving patrol on most days.
- Many cafés and kiosks close early and shut on some weekdays outside summer — check before you rely on them for dinner.
A very safe small town; the real risks are long drives on peninsula roads at dusk (kangaroos and emus), summer heat and fire danger, and patchy mobile coverage away from town.
