Port Vila
Port Vila is a morning city with a night market: do the Market House and the museum before the heat, take Mele Cascades early, rest at midday, take a taxi after dark — and carry small vatu notes.
Port Vila is a compact, hilly harbour town on Efate with a market, a good national museum and seafood on the waterfront. Minibuses run set routes, taxis are plentiful and cheap, and cruise ships fill the centre on some days. Four clusters cover a first visit; Mele Cascades is a short drive, and Tanna and Espiritu Santo are a flight away.

Language
Bislama, an English-based creole, is the national language and the one everyone shares. English and French are official and taught in schools, so you can get by in either in towns. At home people speak one of over 100 local languages.
- Useful Bislama: halo (hello), tangkyu tumas (thank you very much), hamas? (how much?), mi no save (I don't know / I can't), wanem nem blong yu? (what's your name?), lukim yu (see you).
- 'Save' means 'know' or 'can'; 'blong' means 'of' or 'belonging to'.

- Greeting: Say 'halo' or 'gud moning'; shake hands gently; avoid: Loud or hurried greetings in villages
- Village entry: Stop at the edge, ask for the chief or a village contact, pay the custom fee; avoid: Walking onto a village beach or into a nasara (dancing ground) uninvited
- Nakamal: Speak softly, drink the shell in one go, sit quietly after; avoid: Loud talk, bright lights, pushing women into rural nakamals
- Photos: Ask every time; accept a no; pay a photo fee where set; avoid: Photographing ceremonies or sacred sites without permission
- Dress: Island dress or long shorts and sleeves in villages; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Sundays: Keep plans quiet; join a church service if invited; avoid: Noisy activities near villages
Red lines
- Do not photograph people or ceremonial objects without asking.
- Pay any custom fee asked by landowners.
- Do not swim in closed pools or ignore warning signs at waterfalls.

- Unofficial 'custom fee' collectors: Fees are real, but pay at the marked hut or to the landowner your driver introduces, and ask what it covers.
- Taxi price at the airport: Agree the fare before you get in; B buses cost far less for the same ride.
- Volcano tours without the official fee: Book through the Yasur tourism office or your bungalow; unofficial trips can be turned back at the gate.
- Cruise-day price rises: Tours and taxis cost more when a ship is in; book the day before or go on a non-ship day.
- Coconut crab on the menu: Harvesting is limited and the crabs are under pressure; skip it, or at least check the size and season rules.
