Port St. Lucie
Give Port St. Lucie 2 nights in spring-training season (Feb–Mar), otherwise 1: it is a car-first, spread-out city with no walkable core.
Port St. Lucie (locals say PSL) is the largest city on Florida's Treasure Coast, built along the Indian River Lagoon about halfway between Orlando and West Palm Beach. It is suburban and spread out: you need a car, and the draw is baseball, golf, nature preserves and the river rather than a downtown. Most travellers use it as a quiet, cheaper base for the Treasure Coast, or stop for a Mets spring-training game.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and humidity: heat index can top 40 °C; plan outdoor time for early morning.
- Afternoon thunderstorms Jun–Sep; lightning risk on trails and the water.
- Savannas Preserve trails flood seasonally — check conditions before hiking.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct; watch forecasts if visiting then.
- The Crosstown Parkway superstreet intersection at Floresta Drive confuses drivers: follow signs.
Generally safe, but it is a car city: most risk is on the road and in summer heat. Lock the car, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid walking along unlit US-1 stretches at night.
