Port Macquarie is a beach and river town on the New South Wales Mid-North Coast, about 400 km north of Sydney and 550 km south of Brisbane. It works best as a two-night stop on a coastal drive: a compact CBD you can walk, patrolled beaches, a rainforest boardwalk and a koala hospital. Without a car the buses are thin, so plan around the town centre or hire one at the airport.

Get around
The CBD is compact and walkable: Town Green, Town Beach and the breakwater are all on foot. Buses are infrequent and stop early, so a car or taxi is the practical way to reach Flynns Beach, Shelly Beach, Sea Acres and the lighthouse. The Shelly Beach–Town Centre route is the most useful bus line. Hire cars are available at the airport; book ahead.
