Port Jervis
One night, or a day trip from Middletown: the rail turntable, the tri-state marker and the river walk fill half a day, not two.
Port Jervis is a small Orange County city of about 8,800 at the point where New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania meet. It is the western end of the Metro-North Port Jervis Line and the last stop before the Delaware Water Gap, so most travellers use it as a railhead for rafting and river trips rather than as a base. Downtown is compact and walkable; the sights are a rail turntable, a 1793 stone house museum and a granite boundary marker.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Metro-North service is limited on weekends and late evenings: check the timetable before you commit to a return train.
- River outfitters and rafting liveries operate roughly May to October: outside that window there is nothing to book.
- Some downtown storefronts are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the river valley north of town.
A quiet small city; the practical risks are icy pavements in winter, unlit stretches of the river walk after dark and a limited late-night train service. Standard US city caution applies downtown after midnight.
