Port Germein
Give Port Germein one night, or two if you want a full tide cycle: the 1.6 km wooden pier and crabbing are the whole trip.
Port Germein is a small Spencer Gulf town of about 370 people, 260 km north of Adelaide on the A1. Its one draw is the longest wooden pier in South Australia, a 1.6 km walk out over shallow tidal flats, with blue swimmer and sand crabs caught off the deck. There is a pub, a couple of places to sleep and no cafe or takeaway. Come for a night, or as a leg-stretch between Port Wakefield and Port Augusta.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No cafe, takeaway or shop in town: the pub is the only cooked-food option, and it does not serve all day.
- At low tide the water can be more than a kilometre from the shore; at high tide it is shallow for a long way out.
- Blue swimmer crabs in the shallows nip if you tread on them: wear something on your feet.
- Mobile coverage is patchy and there are few services; fill up and buy food before you arrive.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are heat, long shallow water, crab nips and driving the A1 at dusk when kangaroos and emus are on the road.
