Port Fairy
Give Port Fairy two nights as a stop on the Princes Highway or the end of a Great Ocean Road run: walk the old town and Griffiths Island in a day, then leave.
Port Fairy is a small historic port town of about 2,800 people where the Princes Highway meets the ocean, roughly 3.5 hours by car from Melbourne and 30 km west of Warrnambool. Almost everything worth seeing sits inside a 20-minute walk: the 19th-century grid of Bank and Sackville streets, the wharf and river, and Griffiths Island with its lighthouse and mutton-bird colony. Two nights covers it well; one night works if you are only breaking the drive. Accommodation prices jump hard during the March folk festival and on long weekends, so book early or avoid those dates.

Get around
The town is flat and small enough to cross on foot in about 20 minutes, and most visitors never use a bus. Route 8 from Warrnambool stops around town but runs only about five times a day, so treat it as a fallback, not a plan. A car is needed for The Crags, the golf course and the beaches east of town. The Port Fairy–Warrnambool Rail Trail is a sealed former railway line, about 2–3 hours by bike each way.
