Give Port Colborne one night, two if you want a full Canal Days weekend: ship-watching at Lock 8, a lake beach and fish and chips are the whole trip.
Port Colborne is a 20,000-person canal town at the south end of the Niagara Peninsula, where the Welland Canal meets Lake Erie. The draw is watching lake freighters drop through Lock 8, plus a small historic main street, a beach and the four-day Canal Days festival in August. It is a half-day stop for most Niagara trips and a one-night base for ship watchers and cyclists on the Greater Niagara Circle Route.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: traffic is light, but the three lift bridges over the canal can hold you 15–25 min when a ship passes, and there are alternate crossings. Niagara Transit runs a regional bus to Welland on weekdays plus on-demand service; local taxis cover short hops. The Greater Niagara Circle Route trail is the car-free option for cyclists.
