Port Clinton
Port Clinton, Ohio
Give Port Clinton 1–2 nights as a ferry-and-fishing base: board a morning Jet Express to Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island, keep the afternoon for the waterfront.
Port Clinton is a small Lake Erie harbour town (population about 6,000) where the downtown waterfront is the whole point: marinas, fishing charters, head boats and high-speed ferries to the Lake Erie islands leave from the same few blocks. Most visitors sleep one or two nights, cross to Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island by day, and eat Lake Erie perch and walleye in the evening. It is a summer place; outside May–September much of the waterfront thins out.

Get around
A car is the practical default: the town is small but the airport museum, wildlife refuge and Catawba Island are spread along SR 163 and SR 53. Downtown itself is walkable — ferry dock, beach, bars and restaurants sit within about 15 minutes on foot. No useful local bus network; taxis and rideshare exist but are thin, especially late.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer weekends (especially around the Walleye Festival in May and holidays) fill motels and ferries: book beds and ferry seats ahead.
- Ferry and charter schedules are seasonal — confirm the last return sailing before you cross to an island.
- Lake Erie weather turns fast: afternoon storms can cancel charters and small-boat trips.
- Downtown bar strips get loud on summer weekends; if you want quiet, sleep away from W Lakeshore Dr.
A low-crime small town; the real risks are water and weather — wear a life jacket on charters, watch for rip currents at the city beach, and do not miss the last island ferry.
