Port Charlotte
Skip as a base unless you want a cheap pool house: 1 night, or stay in Punta Gorda and drive in for the harbor and the mall.
Port Charlotte is a low-rise, car-first town on Charlotte Harbor between Sarasota and Fort Myers, with no walkable core and no beach of its own. Its pull is price: houses with private pools rent for less than in Naples or Sarasota, and Punta Gorda's airport and waterfront are 15 minutes away. Come for two nights if you want a quiet, cheap base for the harbor, fishing and day trips; otherwise pass through.

Get around
A car is effectively required: the town spreads along US 41 and Veterans' Blvd (FL-776) with no useful bus network for visitors. I-75 runs north–south for Tampa, Sarasota and Fort Myers; US 41 is the slower parallel road. Taxis and rideshare exist but wait times are long outside the centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; the area was hit hard by Hurricane Charley in 2004. Have a plan and check forecasts.
- Summer heat and humidity are severe; do outdoor work before 10:00.
- Rip currents and no lifeguards at many Gulf beaches: swim near a staffed beach.
- Nothing here is walkable; do not book a hotel expecting to stroll to dinner.
Low street crime for a US town of this size; the real risks are driving distances, summer heat and storm season. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars at trailheads and boat ramps.
