Port Broughton
One night if you fish or want a quiet jetty town; otherwise pass through — it is about 170 km from Adelaide on the A1 run north.
Port Broughton is a small fishing and holiday town on the western side of Yorke Peninsula, about 170 km north-west of Adelaide and 56 km south of Port Pirie. The population is around 1,200, swelling to roughly 4,000 in the summer holidays. It is a base for fishing charters and a quieter overnight stop on the A1 run north, not a sightseeing destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Mobile reception is patchy away from town; Telstra and Optus are the most reliable networks.
- Summer holidays (Dec–Jan) are the busiest period: book beds ahead (check).
- Fuel and grocery supply in town is limited: stock up in Kadina or Port Pirie (check).
A quiet, low-crime town. The main practical risk is patchy mobile reception away from town; long drives on the A1 and summer heat are worth planning around (check).
