Port aux Basques
Channel-Port aux Basques
Treat Port aux Basques as a ferry landing, not a destination: one night on arrival or before the crossing, then drive north to Corner Brook.
Port aux Basques is the western gateway to Newfoundland: the Marine Atlantic ferry from North Sydney docks here, and the Trans-Canada Highway starts (or ends) at the terminal. The town itself is small — a railway heritage centre, a local museum and a boardwalk — so most travellers spend one night and move on. The one thing that can change your plans is the wind at Wreckhouse, 25 km northeast on Highway 1.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Wreckhouse, about 25 km northeast on Highway 1, can produce winds strong enough to push vehicles off the road: check the forecast and obey the road message signs before you cross.
- Ferry crossings can be delayed or cancelled by weather, especially in winter: build slack into your onward plans.
- Cell coverage and services thin out fast east of town.
A quiet, safe small town. The real hazard is the wind at Wreckhouse on Highway 1, plus winter driving and ferry weather delays: check the forecast and the road signs before you drive.
