Port Augusta
Give Port Augusta one night, or two if you want the botanic garden and a Flinders Ranges day: it is a road junction, not a destination in itself.
Port Augusta sits at the top of Spencer Gulf, 300 km north of Adelaide, where the Stuart, Eyre, Lincoln and Flinders Ranges highways meet. Almost everyone arrives by car or coach on the way somewhere else. The town itself is worth a half-day: the Wadlata Outback Centre, the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden and the old water tower lookout. Treat it as the last full-service stop before the outback, and stock up here.

Get around
The town is split by the narrow top of the gulf: the centre and most shops are on the east side, the botanic garden and lookout on the west, linked by the bridge. A car is the easy option; taxis cover short hops. There is no local bus network worth planning around.
