Poprad
Base in Poprad for 2–3 nights to reach the High Tatras by electric train; skip it as a sightseeing town, it is a transport hub.
Poprad is the largest town of the Spiš region and the practical gateway to the High Tatras, about 53,000 people at 670 m in the basin under the mountains. The old centre is small: a square, a Gothic church, a museum. What it has is the Tatra Electric Railway to Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso, plus cheap beds and food before and after hiking days. Stay 2–3 nights, more if you hike every day.
