Poonch
Poonch is a half-day stop for the Buddha Amarnath cave and views of the Pir Panjal range, not a base. One night if you want a slow morning in the valley.
Poonch is a small town in the Jammu Division, 240 km from Jammu city, near the Line of Control. Its main draw is the Shri Buddha Amarnath cave temple, a seasonal pilgrimage site in the Loren Valley. The town itself has a bazaar and a few colonial-era buildings. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from the Kashmir Valley or use it as a quiet stop between Jammu and the Pir Panjal passes.

- Hands and feet: Give and eat with the right hand; apologise if your foot touches someone; avoid: Pointing feet at people or shrines; touching books or food with your feet

- Dress: Loose clothes covering shoulders and knees; kurta tops are cheap and cool; avoid: Swimwear or shorts away from Goa beaches
Scams and watch-outs
- The Buddha Amarnath cave is accessible only from April to October; snow blocks the trail in winter.
- Poonch is near the Line of Control: carry your passport or a copy of your visa at all times. Foreign nationals may need a Protected Area Permit (check with the District Magistrate's office).
- Mobile connectivity can be patchy outside town; download offline maps.
- Last shared jeeps to the cave leave by early afternoon.
Poonch is safe for tourists, but the proximity to the Line of Control means security checks are routine. Avoid straying near the border fence. Summer heat and monsoon landslides are the main physical risks.
