Pontrhydfendigaid
Go for one night, or as a half-day stop for Strata Florida Abbey: the ruins take about 1 hour, the village itself about 30 minutes.
Pontrhydfendigaid is a small Ceredigion village on the B4343 between Devil's Bridge and Tregaron, known almost entirely for Strata Florida Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian ruin and burial place of Welsh princes. There is no station and little else to see, so it works as a short stop or a quiet one-night base for hill walking, not as a destination in its own right.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: buses are infrequent, especially on Sundays — check times before you commit.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the surrounding hills.
- The abbey ruins are an open site with uneven ground; check Cadw for current access and any closure.
Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, fast-changing hill weather and patchy phone signal. Tell someone your route if you walk the hills.
