Ponterwyd
Base here only if you have a car and want red kites and mine tours: 1 night, or a half-day stop on the A44 between Aberystwyth and Llangurig.
Ponterwyd is a small village on the A44 in Ceredigion, about 20 km east of Aberystwyth, at the foot of the Cambrian Mountains. It has two reasons to stop: the red kite feeding station at Bwlch Nant yr Arian and the Silver Mountain Experience mine museum. There is no rail station and few buses, so a car decides everything. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one night, not a base for a whole trip.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the A44 runs through the village and both main sights sit off it. Buses between Aberystwyth and Llanidloes pass through, but they are infrequent and not a sightseeing service — check the current timetable before relying on them. Walking works only for the village itself and nearby lanes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No rail station: buses are few and can stop early, so check the last service before you plan a car-free day.
- Mountain weather changes fast; take waterproofs even in summer.
- Some attractions run seasonal or limited opening days — confirm before driving out.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the valleys around the village.
Very low crime; the real risks are narrow, fast A44 bends, livestock on unfenced mountain roads and weather that turns quickly on the hills.
