Ponte de Lima

Ponte de Lima is a small Minho town on the River Lima, built around a 27-arch bridge that mixes a Roman section with a medieval one. It is the oldest town in Portugal and the heart of the Vinho Verde region. The historic centre is compact and walkable in half a day; the draw is the bridge, the riverside, the gardens and the food. Most travellers see it as a stop on the way to Viana do Castelo or Spain, or as a base for the Minho.

Get around
Walk. The sights sit within a few minutes of each other in the small historic centre, and the bridge links both banks. A car is only useful for outlying spots like the Museu dos Terceiros or the north bank. Buses (Rede Expressos) connect to Braga, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon and other district capitals.
