Ponorogo
Go for one night if you want Reog and sate at the source; skip the 3-hour bus from Surabaya if you only have two days in Java.
Ponorogo is a regency town in East Java, about 45 minutes by road from Madiun, known as the home of Reog dance and of sate Ponorogo. There is no airport and no train station in town, so it works as a one-night stop on a Madiun–Pacitan–Trenggalek run, or as a day trip from Madiun. The draw is food, the Reog tradition and Ngebel Lake on the slopes of Mount Wilis; the town itself is a working Javanese market city, not a resort.

Get around
No train station and no city bus network. Intercity buses use Seloaji Terminal. In town, use ojek or ride-hailing apps, or the dokar horse carts around the square. Minibuses and angkodes run to the districts from after dawn until late afternoon only; nothing useful after dark.
