Ponferrada
Give Ponferrada one night, two if you want Las Médulas: the Templar castle and the Camino stop are half a day, the Roman gold mines are the reason to stay.
Ponferrada is the last big town before the Camino de Santiago climbs into Galicia, and its draw is a Templar castle in the middle of an industrial city. Most travellers pass through on the pilgrimage route or break a long drive between León and Galicia. The real sight, the Roman gold-mine landscape of Las Médulas, is 25 km away and needs its own half day.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable: castle, basilica and main square sit within 10 minutes of each other. SMT runs eight city bus routes for the outer districts. Las Médulas and Peñalba de Santiago need a car, taxi or an organised trip.

A safe, ordinary Spanish city; the real risks are summer heat, unlit lanes in the old town at night and the narrow mountain road to Peñalba de Santiago.
