Pondicherry is a former French colony on the Tamil Nadu coast, split by a canal: grid streets, mustard-yellow walls and bakeries east of it, a busy Tamil town west. It is small, walkable and slow. Two nights covers the French Quarter, the ashram, Auroville and one beach; a day trip from Chennai only scratches the seafront.

Walk White Town and the Promenade. Rent a gearless scooter (about ₹300–500/day, 2026 estimate) or a bicycle (₹40–50/day) on Mission St or MG Rd for Auroville and the beaches; carry your licence and expect to leave ID as deposit. Autos are short-hop and negotiable; buses and shared autos cost ₹5–20. Driving is on the left.

- Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers

Scams and watch-outs
- Northeast monsoon (Oct–Dec) brings heavy rain and rough seas; the sea is not safe for swimming at the Promenade.
- Agree auto fares before you get in; ₹50–150 covers most in-town hops.
- Scooter rentals: photograph the vehicle and check brakes and lights before paying.
- Alcohol is cheaper here than in much of Tamil Nadu, but drink-driving checks are real.
- Temple rules: shoes off, shoulders and knees covered.
Generally safe for tourists, including solo women in the centre during the day. The real risks are monsoon rain and rough surf, scooter accidents, heat in Apr–Jun and unlicensed guides near the ashram: agree prices first.
