Poncosari
Skip unless you want a quiet black-sand beach with green-energy tours. A half-day trip from Yogyakarta (40 km) is enough; do not plan a night.
Poncosari is a coastal village on the Indian Ocean in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, about 40 km southwest of Yogyakarta city. Its black volcanic sand beaches, especially Pantai Baru and Pantai Pandansimo, draw Indonesian weekend crowds but are dangerous for swimming due to strong currents. The village is known for its sustainable-energy infrastructure (biogas, solar, wind) and offers ATV rentals and seafood warungs. Mid-week you may have the beach almost to yourself. Most travellers should treat it as a half-day trip from Yogyakarta, not a destination.
