Ponce Inlet
Stay 1–2 nights if you want the lighthouse and quiet beach; otherwise day-trip from Daytona Beach Shores or New Smyrna Beach — 20–35 min by car.
Ponce Inlet is a small barrier-island town at the south end of the Daytona Beach peninsula, built around Florida's tallest lighthouse (175 ft), a sea-turtle hospital and a fishing inlet. There are no hotels inside the town limits, so most visitors sleep in Daytona Beach Shores or New Smyrna Beach and drive in. Two nights covers the lighthouse, the Marine Science Center and Lighthouse Point Park without rushing.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotels or motels inside the town limits — book in Daytona Beach Shores, New Smyrna Beach or Port Orange.
- Hurricane season runs June–November; check forecasts before a summer trip.
- Lightning and strong afternoon storms are common in summer; leave the beach when you hear thunder.
- The area has a high rate of shark bites; swim near lifeguards and avoid murky water at dawn and dusk.
- The lighthouse tower closes in bad weather and the 203-step climb is not for everyone — check the official site before you drive out.
Very safe for a beach town; the real risks are rip currents, lightning, summer heat and shark bites, plus hurricane season June–November. Lock the car and don't leave valuables on the sand.
