Polson
Give Polson one night, two at most: it is a lake base for boat and golf days, not a sightseeing town. Arrive by car on US-93.
Polson sits at the south end of Flathead Lake on the Flathead Indian Reservation, an hour north of Missoula and an hour south of Kalispell on US-93. There is no walkable downtown strip: businesses line the highway, so a car or bike decides your day. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night lake stop between Missoula and Glacier country, with small museums and water time filling the hours.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between motels, museums and the lake are longer than the map suggests; plan on driving.
- Seasonal sights close outside summer — confirm hours before a special trip.
- Summer weekends fill lakefront lodging; book ahead.
- Winter driving on US-93 can be icy; check road conditions.
Polson is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are highway driving, cold lake water and summer wildfire smoke. Lock your car and keep an eye on weather.
