Polmont
Skip Polmont as a base unless you need a cheap Falkirk-area bed: one night for the Kelpies and canal, then move on.
Polmont is a commuter village five miles east of Falkirk, useful mainly as a rail and motorway stop between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The Kelpies, the Union Canal and the Antonine Wall are close; the village itself has a pub, a chip shop and a cluster of budget hotels by junction 5 of the M9. Treat it as one night, not a destination.

Get around
Trains from Edinburgh call at Polmont roughly every 15 min (about 25 min) and continue to Glasgow Queen Street (another 35 min). Polmont station is half a mile south of the village centre and two miles from Grangemouth, with steep ramps to both platforms. Local buses link Falkirk, Polmont station and Linlithgow; taxis cover the hotel strip. A car makes the Kelpies, the canal and the Antonine Wall far easier.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Polmont station is half a mile from the village centre and two miles from Grangemouth: plan a taxi or bus, not a walk with bags.
- The station has steep ramps to both platforms; step-free access is limited.
- Almond Castle is a fragile ruin on a brownfield site: view from a distance, do not enter.
- Jupiter Urban Wildlife Centre has been closed since 2022: check before travelling.
- The M9 hotel strip is car-oriented; without a car you are dependent on taxis and infrequent buses.
Polmont is a quiet commuter village and feels safe day and night. The real issues are weather, unlit canal towpaths after dark, and traffic on the M9 junctions; keep to lit streets and take a taxi back from the hotel strip.
