Polk City
Skip as a base: no hotels, no public transport. Go only for Fantasy of Flight or the Van Fleet Trail, then sleep in Lakeland 20 min away.
Polk City is a town of about 1,600 people on Interstate 4, halfway between Tampa and Orlando, on the edge of the Green Swamp. There is no public transport and no hotel, so it works as a half-day stop for aviation and trail users, not as a place to sleep. Most travellers pass it on I-4 without noticing.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter fog in the Green Swamp can mix with smoke and drop visibility to almost nothing on I-4: slow down and watch the electronic signs.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms bring lightning, hail and 50+ mph winds; the Van Fleet Trail has no shelter.
- No public transport and no hotel in town: plan your last drive of the day before dark.
- Prices and opening hours change: check Fantasy of Flight and the Water Ski Hall of Fame before you drive out.
Low crime and a small-town feel; the real risks are the drive (winter swamp fog on I-4, summer storms) and heat on the Van Fleet Trail, which has no shade or water.
