Pojoaque
Skip Pojoaque as a base unless you want a casino hotel: 1 night, or use it as a 15-minute fuel-and-food stop on US 285 between Santa Fe and Española.
Pojoaque is a small pueblo town of about 1,260 people 15 miles north of Santa Fe on US 285, at the junction with the High Road to Taos. It has a tribal cultural center, a casino with a hotel, and two well-known restaurants, but almost no town centre to walk. Travellers use it as a cheaper bed near Santa Fe or as a road stop, not as a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Almost everything sits on or beside US 285: walk on the shoulder with care, especially after dark.
- The casino and hotel are on pueblo land: rules on alcohol, photography and age differ from New Mexico state law.
- Summer afternoon storms drop heavy rain and hail fast; pull over rather than push through.
- Cell signal is fine in town but patchy on the High Road to Taos.
Pojoaque is quiet and low-crime, but it is a highway town: the real risks are walking on US 285 shoulders, summer monsoon storms and winter ice on the roads. Casino floors are 21+ and alcohol rules follow tribal law.
