Go for one full day from Seoul by car or red bus, not as a base: Pocheon's sights are 20–40 min apart and buses are thin.
Pocheon is a rural city of about 163,000 in northern Gyeonggi, roughly an hour from Seoul, and it is the largest city by area in the province. Its draws are spread across valleys and mountains — Sanjeong Lake, the National Arboretum, Art Valley, Bidulginang Falls and hot springs — so a car or a taxi day makes far more sense than public transport. Most travellers come for one day, or sleep one night near Sanjeong Lake or Sinbuk.

Get around
No subway yet; a Seoul Line 7 extension to Pocheon Station is under construction and targeted for 2026, so check before you rely on it. About 60 city buses run the county, but schedules are in Korean and stops are sparse. A taxi from the bus terminal starts around ₩4,800; hail one with Kakao Taxi. For two or more people, a taxi day between Sanjeong Lake, Art Valley and the arboretum usually beats waiting for buses.

- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name
- Handing things: Two hands for money, cards, gifts and drinks; avoid: Passing things with one hand to older people
- Subway: Quiet voices, bags off seats, queue at the marked lines; avoid: Priority and pink pregnancy seats, even when empty

Scams and watch-outs
- Sights are 20–40 min apart by car and much longer by bus: plan two or three stops, not six.
- The National Arboretum and some sites run on reservations or closed days — check the official site before you travel out.
- Rural roads are dark and deer-crossing signs are real; avoid driving after a long flight.
- English is limited outside Seoul; have addresses written in Korean for taxi drivers.
Very safe by any standard; the real risks are rural roads after dark, thin bus service and winter ice on lake and valley trails.
