Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings more snow and heavier storms than Idaho's other big cities, and the hills make driving hard: check road conditions before you commit.
- Winter inversions trap air against the mountains and local fertilizer plants add to it: air quality can be poor on still, cold days.
- No passenger rail, despite the rail heritage; intercity buses (Salt Lake Express, Greyhound) are the car-free option.
- Fort Hall Casino allows gambling at 18 but not drinking; ID is checked.
Pocatello is a small city with ordinary urban risk; the real hazards are winter driving on hills, ice, and poor air on inversion days. Lock the car and keep to lit streets downtown at night.
