Plymouth, Massachusetts
Plymouth
Give Plymouth one full day plus a night: the waterfront sights take 4–5 h on foot, and Plimoth Patuxet needs a car and half a day.
Plymouth is the 1620 Pilgrim landing site and the town that calls itself America's Hometown. Almost everything historic sits within a 15-minute walk of Plymouth Rock; the living-history museum is about 3 km out on Warren Avenue and is reachable by GATRA bus in season, or by the summer trolley. It works as a day trip from Boston or as a quiet one- to two-night base on the South Shore.

Get around
The historic core is walkable: follow the painted Pilgrim hats of the Pilgrim Path from the Water Street visitor centre. GATRA buses run from downtown to the villages and out Warren Avenue toward Plimoth Patuxet, and the summer America's Hometown Trolley loops the Rock, the museum and Plymouth Beach; outside downtown a car is the practical option.
See and do

Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Downtown parking fills by mid-morning in summer and on event days; use the metered lots and arrive early.
- Route 3 south is slow on summer weekends and weekday rush hours.
- There is no train to Plymouth; the nearest station is Kingston, about 5 mi away, and you need a car or taxi for that leg.
- Plymouth Rock is a fragment of the original stone, not a boulder: set expectations.
Low-risk small city; the real issues are summer traffic and parking, uneven brick pavements downtown, and cold water at the beaches — swim near lifeguards.
