Plymouth
Give Plymouth 2 nights as a base: the Hoe and Barbican take a day, then use it for Dartmoor or Cornwall. Skip it as a day trip from Exeter.
Plymouth is England's largest south-coast city and a working naval port, not a resort. The Hoe, the Barbican and the Sound are walkable in a day; the real value is the position, 30–60 minutes from Dartmoor, the Tamar and the Cornwall border. Two nights covers the city and one day out; three if you want both Dartmoor and the coast.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Plymouth has no airport: it closed in 2011. Plan on Exeter, Bristol or a London airport plus rail.
- Devonport Dockyard is a working naval base: no photography, and some areas are closed to the public.
- The Hoe and Barbican are exposed to wind and rain off the Sound; carry a shell even in summer.
- Water-taxi timetables thin out in the evening and in winter: check the last boat back before you cross.
Plymouth is a normal British city and safe by day; the Barbican and Union Street get rowdy late on weekends, so watch your drink and walk in pairs after midnight.
