Give Pleven one night, or a half-day if you are passing between Sofia and Ruse: the Panorama and Kaylaka park are the reason to stop.
Pleven is North Bulgaria's biggest transport and industrial hub, and its sights all circle one event: the five-month Siege of Pleven in 1877–78, when the town held out until it was encircled and starved. The Panorama, the Skobelev park monuments and the Regional History Museum carry that story; Kaylaka park and the free Svetlin Rusev collection carry the rest. Most travellers use it as a stop on the Sofia–Ruse line, not a base.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end along the pedestrian street. Trolleybuses 3 and 7 link the rail and bus stations with Kaylaka; buy a ticket on board from the conductor. Taxis are cheap and metered; ask for the meter.

Pleven is a quiet, low-crime city; the real risks are unlit park paths after dark, unmetered taxis and winter ice on the pavements.
