Pleasant Hill
Skip Pleasant Hill as a base unless you have a car and a reason (family, work, cheap hotel): one half-day covers downtown, the trail and Rodgers Ranch.
Pleasant Hill is a Contra Costa County suburb on the BART Yellow line between Oakland and Concord, about 30-40 minutes from downtown Oakland. It has a small downtown with a 16-screen cinema, a canal trail and one heritage house open two hours a month. Most travellers pass through; those who stay use it as a cheaper, quieter base for the Outer East Bay with a car.
