Pleasant Bay
Stay 1 night, 2 if you want a whale trip: it is a Cabot Trail stop 40 km north of Chéticamp, not a base for the whole island.
Pleasant Bay is a small harbour village on the Cabot Trail in northwest Cape Breton, sitting at the edge of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It is the island's main whale-watching harbour and a natural overnight between Chéticamp and Ingonish. There is one road, a handful of places to eat and sleep, and the sea is the reason to come. Book beds and boat seats ahead in July and August.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel and food are limited: fill the tank and carry water before the park section.
- Cell signal is patchy along the Cabot Trail; download offline maps.
- Whale trips go out only in calm weather and can be cancelled: keep a spare half-day.
- Moose and deer cross the road at dusk and dawn: slow down.
Very safe for tourists; the real risks are wildlife on the road, patchy phone signal and cold water. Whale boats are stable but the sea can be rough: take the offered gear.
