Plauen
Give Plauen one full day and one night: lace museum, Altmarkt and the Friedensbrücke, then move on. Two nights only if you add the Elstertalbrücke or Pöhl dam.
Plauen is the largest town in the Vogtland, a hilly corner of Saxony near the Czech border, and it built its wealth on lace. The centre is small and walkable, the bridges are the reason engineers stop here, and the town works best as one stop on a Saxony–Bohemia route rather than a base. Trains from Nuremberg, Hof, Zwickau and Dresden make it easy to reach without a car.

Get around
Walk the old town; it is compact and steep in places. Trams and buses cover the rest of the city on one ticket system, and the upper station is a 10-minute walk from the centre. A car helps for the Elstertalbrücke and the Vogtland villages.
