Plains
Plains, Georgia
Go for one day, not a base: the Carter sites fill 4–6 hours, the town is 776 people, and Americus 16 km east has the beds and food.
Plains is a one-street town of about 776 people in southwest Georgia, known as the home of Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president. The Jimmy Carter National Historical Park spreads across the town and the boyhood farm west of it, and most visitors see it in a half day before sleeping in Americus or continuing to Columbus or Macon. There is one small historic inn in town and almost no evening life, so treat Plains as a stop, not a stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No rideshare or taxi coverage to rely on: arrange your own car.
- The park sites are separate buildings with their own hours; check each before you drive out.
- Summer heat and humidity are severe; carry water.
- Cell signal is fine in town but patchy on the rural roads west.
Plains is quiet and low-crime; the real risks are rural driving at night, deer on US-280, and summer heat. Lock the car and keep to lit streets after dark.
