Pittsfield is the largest city in Berkshire County and the practical service base for western Massachusetts: an Amtrak stop on the Boston–Albany line, a downtown with a restored 1900s theatre and a small art-science museum, and cheap beds compared with Lenox or Stockbridge. Sights are spread out and thin on the ground, so most travellers use it for two nights with a car and drive out to the museums, lakes and trails around it. Without a car, one night downtown is enough.

Pittsfield is a low-crime small city and downtown is fine on foot after dark; take normal care west of North Street and around the Linden, Lincoln, Tyler, Dewey and Madison blocks late at night. The bigger hazard is environmental: stay out of the Housatonic River and Silver Lake.
