Pittsburgh sits where the Allegheny and Monongahela meet to form the Ohio, and its hills, rivers and 440-plus bridges make it one of the more scenic US cities east of the Rockies. It is a compact, walkable-plus-bus city with free and cheap museums, a serious food and beer scene, and a downtown you can cross on foot in 20 minutes. Two to three nights covers the core; add a night if you want Fallingwater or a Steelers or Pirates game.

Get around
Downtown and the North Shore are walkable; use buses and the light-rail 'T' for Oakland, the South Side and the stadiums. The two inclines climb Mount Washington from the South Side. A car helps only for day trips — parking Downtown is expensive and one-way streets confuse visitors.
