Pitlochry is a small Victorian resort town in Perth and Kinross, 27 miles north of Perth on the Highland line. The A9 bypasses it, so the centre stayed low-rise and walkable. One night covers the dam, the fish ladder and a distillery; two nights add Ben Vrackie or a day trip to Blair Atholl. A car helps for the glens, but the railway station is in the middle of town.

Get around
The centre is walkable: station, Atholl Road, the dam and the fish ladder are all within 15 minutes on foot. For glens, distilleries and hill starts, use a car, a taxi or the seasonal buses; local buses are thin and some run only on certain days. Bike hire is available in town.

Very safe for a small Highland town. The real risks are winter ice on pavements and hill paths, fast traffic on the A9 and midges on still summer evenings near water.
